Now that I have recovered from my week long on again/off again migraine, I finally feel like putting together outfits for you guys. I suffer from Chronic Migraine and for the most part they are under control, but all the hormonal shifts from my period really did number on me. Luckily, we did not have a lot going on last week so I could kind of just chill out with the kids at home. This week was busy! Between dentist appointments and birthday parties, we were going non-stop.
Sunday
Today we celebrated my mom’s 70th birthday! Much like my dad’s birthday last weekend, we celebrated with a cookout at our house with strawberry shortcake for dessert. We had initially planned on swimming, but the weather turned surprisingly chilly for early June. I wanted to wear something elevated, but sporty for the party. Here’s the look I threw together and I’m quite pleased with how the outfit turned out. The elevated portion of the outfit consists of the chambray button up top and leopard print sandals, while the sporty portion consists of the joggers. I felt comfortable, but still party appropriate.
Monday
Today’s outfit is just okay. I feel like it has all the components to make an interesting outfit, but lacks interesting accessories to take it to the next level. The girls had an 8:30am dentist appointment so I quickly threw this together to head out the door. Like most of my problems with summer dressing, this outfit lacks that third piece. For those that don’t know, the third piece rule is a styling principle in fashion to describe a third piece used to add interest or dimension to an outfit. In the other seasons, my third piece is usually a jacket which isn’t practical in the heat of the summer. I’m thinking a great necklace or belt could be what’s missing.
Tuesday
Today my oldest turned six! We went for lunch at her favorite restaurant and she got to pick out a toy at Barnes & Noble. Later that day, both girls took their first dance glass and had a blast. It was a very fun day. This may be the last day I can get away with comfortably wearing pants this summer. The summer humidity is finally here and everything just feels wet and sticky. This is a pretty simple outfit that I threw on that looks cute, but still allows me to chase after kids. Nothing groundbreaking here, but I felt put together.
Wednesday
On Wednesday’s we were pink! IYKYK! But in all seriousness, I’m trying to up my summer outfit game by adding accessories. While this may be a little embarrassing to admit, I’ve actually been influenced by my six year old to give headbands a try. The kid can really rock a headband and they look great with her bangs! I went out and bought myself a couple. I’m actually really liking how it turned out! The pink tee and green shorts pull out those same colors in the headband and tie the whole outfit together. The headband makes a great summertime third piece without the addition of any extra fabric.
Thursday
Thanks to last night’s rain the humidity wasn’t too high today so I took the opportunity to wear jeans. This pair has a fun stripe that runs up the side which I like to think gives me the illusion of looking taller. I wore my bright yellow top which I am finding to be surprisingly versatile. I wasn’t confident that the color would work well with the other clothes in my closet or that a tight fitting shirt would be practical for a humid Alabama summer. The golden yellow shade works great with different washes of jeans and the pointelle knit makes the shirt very breathable. I ended up liking this top so much that I purchased it in white!
Friday
Earlier in the spring and fall I bought several long sleeve light weight tops to wear in the summer for sun protection with plans to style them with shorts. Basically, I wanted a more fashionable version of my kids’ sun shirt. I decided to go with several peasant inspired tops from Doen and Cleobella. Today I decided to start experimenting with that outfit formula. The basic formula
Long Sleeve Top + Shorts + Sandals + Summer Tote + Fun Summer Accessory
Here I have my Doen top paired with jean shorts and black sandals. My fun summer accessory is my black hat. I opted to leave the shirt untucked for some extra ventilation. I am quite happy with how this outfit turned out. The hat and long sleeve blouse provide a decent amount of sun protection without leaving me feeling hot. The cane tote and braided sandals add interesting details and texture to the outfit. I feel stylish and summer appropriate.
Saturday & Sunday
I did not manage to snap outfits from the weekend. We did attend six year old twins slip -n-slide pool party where I wore a very colorful Farm Rio t-shirt with denim shorts and a blue baseball cap. I pulled out my Teva sandals for the sake of practicality. It felt festive and appropriate for beach themed kids pool party.
On Sunday I cleaned the house in my pajamas in preparation for my six year old’s pool party next weekend.
Out of the week, I Wednesday’s outfit wound up being my favorite. I really liked how the colors in the outfit coordinated with the headband. The outfit felt very pulled together and practical which as a mom is really my goal with any outfit. Next week I’m looking forward to playing more with the long sleeve blouse and shorts outfit formula from Friday.
Until next time,
Carmen
